AVE S-130/730 high speed trains - Madrid, Spain

In April 2004, Renfe Larga Distancia awarded the consortium Talgo-Bombardier Transportation an order for the delivery of 44 powerheads for high speed passenger operations in Spain. An additional order for 46 powerheads followed in September 2005.

The S-130 high speed electric train can operate under two voltages and on two track gauges. With these trains, neither locomotives nor bogies need to be changed at the borders of 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC networks or when Iberian (1668 mm) and standard gauge (1435 mm) tracks meet.

Additionally, the S-730 trains are able to operate with diesel engines without any catenary voltage. The maximum speed of S-130 trains is 250 km/h and S-730 is 200 km/h.

In June 2008, Renfe Operadora awarded the maintenance contract for 14 years to Talgo-Bombardier consortium. Since the beginning of the maintenance contract BTren Joint Venture (w/Renfe) has been executing the full maintenance activities for Bombardier's scope of supply:

  • Predictive maintenance according to the official maintenance plan
  • Corrective maintenance
  • Management of fleet improvements

The maintenance activities are being performed in Fuencarral (Madrid) and Can Tunis (Barcelona) depots.

Major achievements:

  • 100% availability index in 2018
