INTERFLO

ERTMS – Interoperable and Advanced Train Control

Initially created to allow trains to cross borders without the need to change locomotive or driver, the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS/ETCS) is now being adopted globally. Responding to an EU initiative, the system was developed by key partners in Europe’s rail and signalling industry (UNISIG).

As an active member of UNISIG, Bombardier is at the forefront in producing the system specifications, for example, with the Bombardier-developed Eurobalise transmission technology.

Bombardier leads the way in providing ERTMS technology as part of its INTERFLO range of mainline solutions. The INTERFLO 250, 450 and 550 are Bombardier's scalable European Rail Traffic Management Systems (ERTMS) mainline scalable solutions for Level 1, 2 and 3 respectively, suitable for secondary and regional lines and high speed and commuter lines.

INTERFLO 250 –  Scale Up Your Network to ERTMS Level 1

The INTERFLO 250 solution is an ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 signalling solution for main lines with SIL4 certification. This solution comprises all the sub-systems required, including the onboard and wayside Automatic Train Protection (ATP) equipment.

The INTERFLO 250 solution is commonly applied as an overlay to existing conventional lines, sometimes equipped with national ATP, providing higher levels of safety, but offering an economical migration and early experience with ERTMS Level 1 technology.

We have developed a range of Specific Transmission Modules (STMs) which can read signals from the legacy wayside ATP infrastructure and transfer it to the ATPC onboard equipment for execution. The overlay capacity of our systems enables shorter delivery times with minimum disruption to the existing service.

Control Room

Traffic is supervised by the EBI Screen central traffic control (CTC) room system. This is a modern state-of-the-art computer-based control and supervision system allowing the operator to give commands through a mouse or keyboard. It offers the facility to have the position of the vehicles and optional wayside objects shown on both normal display screens and large rear projection screens.

The functionality includes:

  • Advanced CTC with flexible automatic route-setting
  • Supervision and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
  • Passenger Information Displays (PIDs)
  • Closed-circuit TV (CCTV)
  • Public Announcement (PA)
  • Radio communication

Computer-Based Interlocking

The INTERFLO 250 solution uses the EBI Lock computer-based interlocking system. These interlockings can be either centralized or distributed, in which case the central unit is located in one place and the object controller units that drive the wayside objects can be located some distance from the central unit. Dual and redundant architecture with hot standby provides high availability.

ATP Wayside Equipment

Our EBI Link wayside equipment portfolio is a range of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) equipment, including Eurobalises that provide ATP for main line and mass transit systems.

Fixed telegram Eurobalises are mainly used to transmit static information and to serve as reference points for the trains to calibrate their position on the track. These Eurobalises give an exact position to the train as it passes and allows the train to normalize its position.

Train Detection

The detection of vehicles in the INTERFLO 250 solution is done through axle counters or track circuits which provide continuous data to our EBI Track train detection.

Point Machines

A range of EBI Switch point machines from the EBI Switch point machine range are available to be used, depending on what is suitable for the particular market. The point machines are operated by the EBI Lock CBI.

Signals

The INTERFLO 250 solution uses conventional or LED signals. The signals are used to give the train proceed or not-to-proceed information.

Level Crossings

EBI Gate level crossing systems are used in the INTERFLO 250 solution.

ATP Onboard Equipment

Onboard equipment consists of the EBI Cab distributed onboard system. The onboard ATP system controls the train according to the information sent by the Eurobalises. The onboard ATP equipment ensures that the driver does not override the speed restructions.

Processes and Tools

The EBI Tool tool design and maintenance software provides an integrated environment for the adaptation, engineering, installation, test, commissioning and maintenance of the INTERFLO 250 solution.

Train Management System

The EBI Drive 50 train operating systems assists the driver to achieve energy savings while retaining punctuality, promotes sustainability and appeals to the expectations of the travelling public. Potential energy savings of up to 15 per cent are achievable. The EBI Drive 50 system is applicable to primary power sources including electric, diesel or hybrid.

INTERFLO 450 – ERTMS Level 2 Signalling for High-Speed Lines

The INTERFLO 450 ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 signalling solution is for mainlines with SIL4 certification. This solution comprises all the sub-systems required, including onboard and wayside ERTMS Automatic Train Protection (ATP) equipment.

The INTERFLO 450 solution can be applied to new, dedicated high-speed lines offering high levels of safety and speeds up to 350 km/h, or as an overlay to existing conventional lines replacing the national ATP system or for mixed operation requiring Specific Transmission Modules (STM) functionality. The INTERFLO 450 solution goes a step further, being able to interface with GSM-R and with other railway communications standards such as GPRS and LTE. The need for wayside equipment such as light signals, is completely removed leading to a reduction in long-term maintenance costs.

Radio Block Centre

The main function of the EBI Com radio block centre is to control and supervise the ETCS Level 2 operating trains – for example, sending movement authorities to the relevant trains. The EBI Com supports the Euroradio protocol which provides safe transmission via the GSM-R network.

INTERFLO 550 – Communication-Based Signalling System for ERTMS-Compatible Regional Lines

The INTERFLO 550 wayside train control solution is flexible, modularized and specifically designed to provide the capacity, adaptability and cost-effectiveness needed for both low and high-density lines.

Its modular design concept enables us to customize the solution to particular preferences and supports future growth while consistently ensuring safe and efficient train operation.

The INTERFLO 550 solution goes a step further, being able to interface GSM-R but, GORS, LTE, and Tetra.

With the Level 3 Hybrid application, the INTERFLO 550 helps smooth upgrades of Level 2 lines that requires an increase its capacity without disrupting existing service. The hybrid solution still allows the use of the existing Level 2 equipment and the operation of non-equipped trains.

Radio Block Centre

The EBI Com radio block centre transfers the train position sent by radio to the interlocking systems. Information about train routes from the interlocking systems is then sent to the EBI Com radio block centre and converted into movement authorities to be sent out to individual trains.

ATP Wayside Equipment

Our EBI Link portfolio is a range of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) wayside equipment, including Eurobalises that provide ATP for main line and mass transit systems.

EBI Link operates in conjunction with the onboard ATP computer, giving drivers speed information and details about objects ahead such as signals or points. Balises communicate either fixed or variable data from track to train and are ERTMS-compliant. The balise is activated by an antenna mounted under a passing train, thus, avoiding the need for a power supply.

Train Detection

Detection of vehicles in the INTERFLO 550 solution is done via radio but the system is capable of operating with secondary train detection through axle counters or track circuits if required by the customer.

Level Crossings

Complete EBI Gate level crossing systems are used in the INTERFLO 550 solution.

ATC Onboard Equipment

EBI Cab ATP system ensures that train movements are carried out safely in accordance with the movement authorities by continuously monitoring the train speed. EBI Cab informs the driver to brake and initiates braking (if necessary) to keep the train at a safe speed. The EBI Cab system is designed to increase traffic capacity and safety by allowing higher speeds and shorter headways between trains.

Automatic Train Control (ATC) wayside equipment on the track informs the ATC onboard the train about traffic restrictions coming up and gives continuous information on the highest permissible speed. The necessary information is presented on the driver's panel.
