Bombardier to deliver BR 430 series in a new design to Deutsche Bahn Regio’s Stuttgart S-Bahn

  • The existing BR 430 fleet in the Stuttgart region will increase to 155 trains of the same series

Today, global mobility solution provider Bombardier Transportation announced German railway operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) as the previously undisclosed customer that signed a contract for the supply of rail vehicles at the end of 2018. The contract is for 58 additional BR 430 series S-Bahn trains for the Stuttgart region.

“We are happy that Deutsche Bahn and the Association of the Region Stuttgart once again opted for the BR 430 series to expand the range of services on their S-Bahn network,” said Bruno Poschmann, Head of Portfolio Deutsche Bahn at Bombardier Transportation. “We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with DB. Together, we will successfully expand and modernize the mobility services in and around Stuttgart.”

Recently, DB introduced the new exterior design of the S-Bahn fleet, featuring visual cues to guide passengers on the platform towards the appropriate sections of the train. The majority of the new trains will be delivered in the new exterior design. The 97 trains of the same series already in passenger service in the Stuttgart region are fully compatible with the new trains, enabling all trains in this series to be coupled together. In addition, the train drivers will find the new vehicles’ driver cab and control system identical to the trains they are currently operating, eliminating the need for additional training.

BR 430 series S-Bahn trains for Stuttgart

The new trains for Stuttgart’s S-Bahn will be delivered in a new exterior design.

They score high marks for their eco-friendly and intelligent energy management that recaptures the excess energy typically lost while braking and uses otherwise wasted heat from their power converters and transformers to heat the vehicles’ interior. Passengers can also look forward to increased reliability, comfort and safety while in transit.

In addition, all commuters will be able to fully walk-trough the air-conditioned BR 430 trains which offer complete visibility from end to end. This transparency combined with video surveillance increases passenger safety. The trains also feature wide multi-purpose areas and a modern passenger information system that displays information on connecting trains in real time. S-Bahn trains of the same vehicle type are also successfully in operation in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main area.
