Today, Bombardier is celebrating the 170th anniversary of its site in Görlitz, Germany, which has been producing rail vehicles since 1849. Over its lifetime, the site has made railway history with its numerous innovations that met great demand worldwide. It is the oldest factory in the country which has continuously produced rail vehicles.
“Everything began 170 years ago with the construction of a simple wooden cart and the vision of the founder, Christoph Lüders. Since then thousands of railway cars, from the first salon sleeper for the Prussian Imperial Royal train to modern double-deck trains, have been and will continue being built here”, said Michael Fohrer, President of Bombardier Transportation Germany. “Some of our staff here are third or fourth-generation rail employees and it’s their passion and tireless commitment that has ensured their site’s success”.
For many decades, producing double-deck cars, a success story that began in 1936 with the first double-deck car for the Lübeck Büchen Railway Company, has been the core activity of the Bombardier site in Görlitz. But intercity, regional trains and metros built in Görlitz are also in operation worldwide.
“It’s impressive: 170 years of rail vehicle production experience. Each day, trains built at this site move millions of people in Germany, Europe and other parts of the world. An amazing achievement”, adds Michael Fohrer. “With the reorientation as a centre of competence for carbody production, the site will continue to play a key role for Bombardier in Germany.”
The approximately 1,200 employees in Görlitz are proud of their 170-year history, which will be celebrated from 12 p.m. with an open day. Visitors can expect shows, activities for children, attractions and site tours, as well as an exhibition of historic model railways.
