Bombardier’s global leadership in the light rail sector is built on innovative technology that has been tried and tested in numerous applications, resulting in best-in-class reliability. FLEXITY LRVs have a unique modular concept, providing operators with the opportunity to customize the tram to meet their specific requirements, from current infrastructure to operator branding. 

Bombardier was the first manufacturer in the industry to combine 100 per cent low-floor technology with conventional wheel-set bogies. Over 5,000 FLEXITY trams have been ordered or are already in successful revenue service in worldwide.

Unmatched capacity

The FLEXITY tram is highly flexible and can be configured to match changing ridership levels. Due to the light rail vehicles modularity, it can fulfill the capacity needs of any urban environment by adding additional modules to the existing vehicles at a later point in time. 

The tram can be coupled to form several-car trainsets, enabling an overall capacity of more than 20,000 passengers per hour, per direction.

Customized design

Bombardier recognizes that the light rail market is very diverse and that its customers have differing requirements. The FLEXITY tram can be tailored to the customers' specific needs, but operators can be confident that the vehicles are proven and reliable.

A comfortable journey from point A to B

FLEXITY trams are renowned for their ability to run smoothly. When using conventional wheel-set bogies, ground noise and vibration transfer are minimal. Spacious interiors, wide doors, air conditioning, enhanced facilities for people with limited mobility and improved passenger information, all ensure a more comfortable journey.

Putting safety first

Safety first has always been one of Bombardier’s top priorities. Bombardier’s extensive experience in active and passive safety technology is mirrored in the design of the FLEXITY tram, which sets new standards in crash performance.

The trams can be equipped or retrofitted with the world’s first homologated Obstacle Detection Assistance System (ODAS) which assists drivers in critical situations. ODAS detects and tracks even non-metallic obstacles and warns the driver of potential risks, thereby increasing the safety of the driver, passengers and all other traffic participants. As an option, ODAS can autonomously initiate smooth braking for increased safety.

With our Collision and Overspeed Monitoring and Prevention Assistance System (COMPAS), which is undergoing testing, trams operate at a safe speed and brake automatically, avoiding collisions. The system, which is based on image data, algorithms and AI, provides greater safety for passengers, drivers and road users.

Easy to maintain and highly energy efficient

The operational efficiency of a light rail vehicle plays a major role in its lifecycle costs. Only by maximizing availability and minimizing running costs is it possible to ensure a satisfactory return on investment.

 trams have been designed to keep operational and maintenance costs as low as possible. Customers can also benefit from using our FlexCare wellbeing package or select individual service offerings for spare parts, technical support and repairs, as well as obsolescence management.

Easily integrated into existing maintenance processes, FlexCare enables customers to perform maintenance at their own depots under the overall maintenance management responsibility of Bombardier. This system guarantees high availability and reliability for the vehicles and offers customers planning reliability and cost certainty over the contract period.

In addition, the FLEXITY trams are optimized for energy efficiency, supported by a CO₂-controlled HVAC, LED lights and a high degree of energy recuperation.

Battery-powered variant for emission-free transport

The FLEXITY tram can run with battery power when equipped with MITRAC traction batteries, for catenary-free operation.

Bombardier's partner CSR Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Co. Ltd. (CSR Puzhen), delivered 15 battery-powered trams for Nanijing, China based on Bombardier’s FLEXITY 2 technology, equipped with Bombardier’s MITRAC traction batteries.
