FLEXX Compact bogies serve the complete range of commuter and regional trains thanks to a flexible concept.

The FLEXX Compact bogie family is adaptable in features and performance range due to a wide use of adaptable modules and proven standardized components to meet customer needs and operational requirements.

FLEXX Compact bogies are running under the SPACIUM in France, the OMNEO in France, the TALENT vehicles in Germany, Austria and Norway, and the TWINDEXX in Switzerland.

FLEXX speed bogies

With long distances and journey times, comfort and superior ride quality are essential for high-speed trains. FLEXX speed bogies reflect these important requirements by offering a high comfort suspension system for superior ride performance.

FLEXX speed bogies are running under the ZEFIRO in Italy, the CRH1 in China and the ICE train in Germany.

Reliability and efficiency

FLEXX speed bogies have proved their reliability and efficiency since they were introduced. These bogies are characterized by an excellent ride quality at very high-speeds up to 330 km/h, and are equipped with robust, well-proven and high-performance MITRAC Power drives.

Low maintenance costs

The FLEXX speed bogie was designed to ease maintenance and to use less energy, both of which have a big impact on the total lifecycle costs of the equipment.

In addition, FLEXX speed bogies can be equipped with the CBM concept – condition-based maintenance – optimizing maintenance activities for efficient operational management of the train.

FLEXX Eco bogies

The FLEXX Eco bogie has been developed to satisfy customer requirements in terms of lifecycle costs and environmental considerations.

The success of the design depended on a fundamental re-think of the conventional bogie layout while retaining and improving overall safety and performance. Simplicity combined with the inboard bearing wheelset concept has resulted in a compact, lightweight and robust bogie.

FLEXX Eco bogies are in operation on the Voyager, Meridian and TURBOSTAR in the United Kingdom and in Norway for Norwegian Railways (NSB). It is also in production for ICE4 trains in Germany.

Train weight reduction

FLEXX Eco bogies optimize the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle by reducing the train weight. The bogie is compact and lightweight: a 30 per cent reduction in the weight of the bogie mass compared with a conventional bogie, and a 25 per cent reduction in unsprung mass.

Improved total cost of ownership

The FLEXX Eco bogie reduces maintenance costs by allowing easy access to wheels and brakes, thanks to its inboard bearing design. Maintenance intervals are also extended significantly due to the lower unsprung mass of the FLEXX Eco bogie leading to lower wear on track. With its compact design, the FLEXX Eco bogie reduces energy consumption.


The FLEXX Eco bogies enable safe and comfortable journey for urban passengers. The specific design of the bogie reduces track damage due to its low weight, but also reduces rail wear thanks to a better performance on curves.

FLEXX Power bogies

The FLEXX Power bogie portfolio serves the complete range of locomotives from freight and heavy haul to passenger trains as well as very high-speed power heads.

TRAXX  locomotives have been successfully equipped with FLEXX Power bogies for freight and passenger traffic in Europe, South Africa and Russia.

Different speed ranges require adequate drive systems. Especially in the case of high-speed locomotives, a clever integration of the motors and drive units into the bogie system is a prerequisite for successful operation.


FLEXX Power bogies are as robust and reliable as the locomotive under which they are mounted. Special consideration is given to the proper structural configuration of the bogie frames as they undergo considerable wear through traction forces from the locomotive and drives to the rail.

FLEXX Power bogies have a tractive effort up to 240 kN.

Flexible configuration

For high-speed locomotives, the innovative integration of traction motors and drive units within the bogie is a prerequisite for successful operation.

The modular and proven design of the FLEXX Power family enables:

  • Flexible configuration of primary suspension parameters depending on operational conditions
  • Wear-free guidance of the wheelsets
  • Low wheel wear by excellent performance on curves
  • Easy exchange of the bogies due to simple bogie/carbody connection
  • Optimum transmission of traction forces between the bogie and car by low-level traction road and reduced transfer

Innovative mechatronic platform

Safety, efficiency and flexibility are guiding principles in Bombardier’s product development.

Four mechatronic solutions using a modular system with standard components have been developed and can be applied to the full portfolio of FLEXX Bogies:

  • FLEXX Track – track condition monitoring

FLEXX Tronic technology with active radial steering and stability control (ARS) installed on FLEXX Bogies allows the stability and curve-friendliness of the train and many other benefits:

  • Track-friendliness: diminution of track impact
  • Reduced maintenance costs: active system and self-diagnosis to anticipate the decrease of performance
  • Reduced noise and vibration: comfort improvement for passengers thanks to tilting


FLEXX Tronic technology can equip any FLEXX Bogies and can be used on different national track networks.

FLEXX Track – track condition monitoring

FLEXX Track is a sensor-based measurement system installed on the vehicle. It is designed to monitor track conditions and evaluate their deterioration over time.

The information obtained thanks to the FLEXX Track system is used to identify and locate track disturbances such as track torsion, vertical track disturbances, crushes at joints and switches, and rail ripples.

It is designed as a modular system and can be configured for various measurement requirements.

FLEXX Guide – bogie condition monitoring

FLEXX Guide is a monitoring systems in the bogie, dedicated to safety or maintenance.

The benefits for the operator include:

  • Maximized components’ lifetime
  • Increased safety

All systems are built up from components out of Bombardier’s mechatronic building blocks.

During development, attention was especially given to support a simple integration and easy retrofit.

FLEXX Tronic WAKO technology

FLEXX Tronic WAKO technology is an innovative mechatronic solution designed to compensate the natural roll movement of a carbody.

The system allows the vehicle to increase speed in curves by 15 per cent, enabling shorter journey times and improved punctuality with lower infrastructure investment.

The design principles enable a high comfort for passengers with no seasickness effect.

The self-diagnosis features lead to a high reliability, lower lifecycle costs and reduced maintenance costs for the trains.

FLEXX Tronic WAKO is currently in operation on the FLEXX Compact bogies of the TWINDEXX Express double-deck trains in Switzerland.

The MITRAC Power drive 3000 is specifically designed to satisfy customer requirements for high-power propulsion systems such as locomotives and high-speed powerheads used in passenger and freight transportation.

The forced air-ventilated motors on the MITRAC Power drive 3000 asynchronous traction motors are highly standardized and provide exceptional reliability as well as optimally exploiting the characteristics of the converter.

Bombardier has sold more than 35,000 MITRAC Power drive 3000 products.

Low energy consumption

The MITRAC drive 3000 products offer the right drive solution for every high-power freight or passenger train. The selection of an appropriate type of suspension depends on the required vehicle speed and tractive effort: partly suspended drives are best for power heads for high-speed trains with low tractive effort.

Ease of maintenance

On the other end of the spectrum, Bombardier offers robust and maintenance-friendly nose-suspended drives that fit best for freight locomotives that require high tractive effort at moderate speeds.
For universal and passenger locomotives that require higher speeds and/or minimal wear of the tracks, Bombardier offers fully suspended drives which have the lowest unsprung mass.

MITRAC Power permanent magnet motor

The MITRAC Power drives portfolio provides market-leading Permanent magnet motor solutions that save energy during the train’s operation directly by increased energy efficiency and indirectly by reduced vehicle weight.

MITRAC Power permanent magnet motors are successfully operating on the TWINDEXX Express for Switzerland, the OMNEO for SNCF in France and the INNOVIA Monorail for Sao Paulo, Brazil.

High reliability

Compared to conventional induction motors, the MITRAC Power permanent magnet motors are more efficient thanks to optimized parameters such as energy consumption, size and weight, or reduced number of driven axles on a train.

Energy efficiency

Using MITRAC Power permanent magnet motors enables significant energy savings over the vehicle lifetime: up to 10 per cent reduction of a train’s total energy consumption.

Vehicle optimization

The MITRAC Power permanent magnet motor improves the vehicle performance by providing superior tractive effort. Torque is maintained at high-speeds which retains efficiency. It allows for more electrodynamic braking resulting in decreased energy consumption.

Further environmental improvements can be achieved when a larger portion of braking is done electrically which results in noise reduction and improved air quality in tunnels.

The MITRAC Control TMCS (Train Control Management System) is a modular, scalable, secure and open-standard control and communication platform.

It manages and controls the flow of information both on board between different sub-systems such as converters, doors, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, and also between the train and ground.

The MITRAC Control TCMS platform is designed as a distributed, modular, scalable solution. It is very reliable and supports redundancy and the building of highly available architectures. The communication is based on an IP backbone. It controls and manages all sub-systems on the train, independent of supplier or technical generation.
